"Landmarks of Poughkeepsie" & Patriotic Parade (1963)

Uploaded by: KKD1247
Video Description:
Here are two films of mine from the early 1960s:
"LANDMARKS OF POUGHKEEPSIE" - With a new YouTube introduction, here is an 8mm movie I made for a 7th grade civics class. It presented many of the historical sites of my hometown in New York State. I shot the movie and my friend, the late Chuck Dorfman, wrote the narration. Back then, it was so unusual to produce a movie rather than write a paper, the local Poughkeepsie Journal newspaper wrote an article about it along with a photo. I hope to find the audio tape of the soundtrack but in the meantime, here is the film along with some updated music.
Filmed: Fall 1960
THE RATIFICATION OF THE CONSTITUTION PARADE - Here is an 8mm home movie of mine from Poughkeepsie celebrating New York's ratification of the US Constitution. The event was held once every 25 years with a large parade down Main Street. You'll see me pass by playing the drum with the Poughkeepsie High School Band. Later, I arrive home. I played in many parades over the years but this is the only one that was shot with a movie camera.
Filmed: Fall 1963

Do they still celebrate the ratification of the constitution? Or do they now ignore it like the politicians inside the beltway?

Sadly, I don't think so. I've gone thru about all of my old Pok films. When I paid a visit there in the early 90s, I couldn't believe what I saw!

On Second thought - let me know if you find the script - I spend quite a bit of time at the Clinton House - it's still there and undergoing some revitalization work. It should be all spiffed up for the 2009 Hudson-Fulton Quad. & by then the Old Pok. Railroad Bridge may also be open as "Walkway over the Hudson".

Thanks so much for sharing your personal videos. I grew up in Clintondale and when we went to shop in Poughkeepsie it was a big deal.I attended Dutchess and worked in Wallaces for about a year. Those parades were always something to look forward to. If you have more please share with us who are far away!!

This brings back alot of memories of growing up in Poughkeepsie back in the 50s. I remember the Thanksgiving Day Parades on Main Street, and the Alexander Hamilton at the Main St. dock every summer afternoon.

It did for me too. I was born there and grew up in the 50s & 60s there. I rode on the Alexander Hamilton a few times. Fun times back then.

Thanks so much! I wish more films from Poughkeepsie would emerge. I know my grandpa had made movies for at least 20 years of events back home from the 40's to the 60's.

Too cool. I was born in Poughkeepsie in 1963. Many of these landmarks were part of my childhood and my kids too. I remember taking my kids to sit on the cannon in their cub scout uniforms. Thanks for the memories. It is nice to see Po'town reflected in a good light. Usually you only hear that name when someone is making a joke about it.
