I think you're oversimplifying or You're just lazy and don't want to think about who's responsible for this mess. The left, unfortunately, couldn't defend itself for years because the right wing had stolen and perfected the vocabulary of indignation without any real substance. After carter it became easy to demonize us and blame all of the social ills on liberalism in general. I spent some time studying that particular bugaboo -- coming across Hofstadter's grandiose essay The Paranoid Style in the process. I have huge respect for Gore Vidal, HUGE. but he is a bitter old man, who's intelligence is getting the better of him. He is starting to think there is a massive global conspiracy and if you listen and read his work, he seems to be bordering on some form of insanity.
I do hope the man lives a comfortable life and we remember him for his earlier and less fearful work. (this is a gret interview though!)
