Well personally i say both of them. The Fray is cool, The Fray are cool. As for The rolling stones, i think you say it in plural because of Stones being in plural. Linkin Park is cool, Linkin Park are cool but if the name was Linkin Parks it would be definetly be Linkin Parks are cool. I mgiht be wrong altogether obviously :P but that is my opinion.

Devagaijin - does it honestly matter? All you are doing is making yourself seem pitiable for joining in this pointless debate of idiocy.
I am not an English teacher (but if I was I would have the intelligence to capitalise 'English' and therefore not make myself sound hypocritical) but the Fray is a collective name for a group of people, which means it is technically plural and therefore the correct phrase is 'the Fray are cool'.

Bands are not singular, but band is singular. The band The Fray is cool, but the bands Oasis and The Fray are cool. Oh by the way teaching English in a Japanese university (your profile states you live in Japan) doesn't mean you have your grammar perfect =). Regardless of that, if you were from England or America it still wouldn't necessarily mean that you have perfect knowledge of grammar, as it doesn't generally occur in exams in university, only school.

lets get this straight - i didnt start the argument but i will try to finish it because its a shame people arent just talking about the fray
team, band, army, group = collective nouns.
In the US, english was simplified many years ago, spellings and grammer(ie: color - no 'u')
Thus, in the UK - a collective noun like band or team =mainly plural, but this changes in a pretty complex way to singular depending on context.
less complex US form - a collective noun is regarded as a singular unit
