What about carlos santana ? Elvis Presly? not rock. and as for popularity, i dont know how many people you know who know who billy sheehan actually is.
And, id say that miller, wooten and clarke were more inclined to funk than jazz.
flea is decent but it's pretty ridiculous how people make him out to be the "best slap bassist" or whatever else.
and all sheehan can really do well, as he does in this video, is repeating the same musical phrases and wanking off to the same scales extremely fast. but i guess he's got some monster chops, so for that he sortof has my respect.
I disagree about Billy. I have seen him play live many times. He is a solid pocket player but he is just known for all of the flashy crap.
Billy demonstrated incredible technical skills but he showed absolutely no musicality that grabbed me on an emotional level. Note: I play bass too.
it pisses me off how great people think he is, when he wouldnt even be around without people like Jaco Pastorius and Larry Graham.
by the way, anything you guitarists can do on six strings, us bassists can do on four.
