RE: wasn't grendel ... ( 4 months ago by rareiser)
RE: wasn't grendel a monster? Well, how many times have people called other people monsters? Maybe because they looked different, or were extra strong, or particularly mean, or just misunderstood? Monster can be just as cool a term for a human that you disagree with as it can be for a creepy beast. Which takes more imagination? And if you're the storyteller, which word will you use? Monster? or "this really big dude?"
Booing this because Grendel was a man is just plain unimaginative.

What are you talking about? Beowulf is French for Werewolf and seen as it is set in France I expected there to be a werewolf or two in it. Instead there is this freaky looking Granville prancing about.

Having seem the Sir Anthony Hopkins CGI version, I'd say I was diassapointed at this interpretaion of a monster. As the fatehr had relations with the Shethingy lol her son would have been hideous and deformed (as he was in the cgi version) oh well, still a good film! :D

Umm, where do you get the French connection from? It's set in Denmark, the hero is Swedish, and the poem is in old English.

Beowulf was never king of denmark and he was never swedish but a Gaet, the Gaets are also called east danes and until recently that part of sweden was danish, so sorry he wasnt swedish.

Dude, the discussion was about some dude being angry about there not being werewolves in the movie...historical accuracy wasn't a priority. I made a general reference to current geography.
In regards to ... ( 3 months ago by joecore7)
In regards to werewolves... Loup-garou is werewolf in French. Beowulf is Anglo-Saxon (Old English) for bees-wolf = bear. This is how some scholars try to connect Beowulf with the historical character Boedvar-Bjarki who was a supposed skin-changer: a man who became a bear in battle; This is akin to the fact that he was a berserker in combat.
There are 4 modern ... ( 3 months ago by joecore7)
There are 4 modern films (I know of) that interpret Beowulf. None of them are completely faithful to the poem and take many liberties to appeal to a modern audience. In my opinion they rank as such: 1-13th Warrior (1999) a combination of Beowulf and the journals of Ibn Fadlan which rationalizes the monsters; 2-Beowulf & Grendel (2005) no need for Selma and the F-bomb ; 3-Beowulf (2008) the hero & king are not fathers to the troll wife's offspring; 4-Beowulf (1995) bad scifi with Chris Lambert

This was interesting, but not that great. Grendel was the worst but at least that had monsters instead of troll people. At least he kiled the mom too. Stellan was the most this movie offered and I enjoyed him though.
