I had trouble with Verbatim CD-Rs so I did some research and discovered Tayio Yuden blanks made in Japan are better. The problem is they aren't easy to find in Canada. However, I found out that older Fuji blanks (pre 2004) were made by Tayio Yuden, so I found and bought a crapload of them. They work really well! I agree with slow burning. Even my Pioneer DVD recorder made some coasters at 8x but somehow, switching to 16X DVD-Rs, it made it slow down to 4X and no more coasters!

Thanks for the valuable information on CD preservation. I have tried many brands in the past and been using the Delkin Devices Gold CD-R's with great success for a couple of years now. Since I live in the Caribbean, humidity and high levels of ultraviolet rays are extremely bad for any recordable medias. I store my cd's in plastic food containers that have a rubber gasket on the cover with fresh silica packets. I also have all of my data on 2 separate external hard drives for daily usage.

I also have 2 hard drives for storing data. Everytime I save a document it automatically goes onto the internal drive as well as a removeable one. The only time the 2nd one is conected is while a save is in progress.

im guessing thats why blue-ray uses blue to last longer? Makes sense, intresting stuff. Keep it up :D
Vebatim i found recorded a lot better with less errors, there what i usally buy :)
Why is it better for lasers to become blue?
Why do newer burners always seem to go faster at recording? is it all a gimmick or can they do it safer?
Blue lazars can be ... ( 1 month ago by danielgosson)
Blue lazars can be focused onto a smaller point as the wavelenght of blue is shorter than red. This enables the use of thinner tracks so more can be put on the disk. CD is infrared, DVD is visible red I think, Thus it can use a smaller track than CD. I suppose we will eventually have ultra violet lazars & even an XRAY lazar if someone figures out a way to control the weird optics of Xrays.

Cheers for the info, great to hear other people's knowledge and experience with cd-rs. I also have also found Verbatim discs are the most reliable. I use standard verbatim cd r consumer discs that are grey in ocean blue coloured cases. I have also found the burn speed factor you mentioned crucial to the discs sound quality. I actually burnt 3 discs on my pc burner on 24 speed the other day and the sound quality was terrible it had loads of hisses and bumps.

I burn everything at slow speed, my DVD burner doesn't work very well anymore, and I find if I burn a CD at a high speed, my old Panasonic MP3 CD player has lots of problems playing the CD, it's so anoying.

I started using CD-R discs about 8 years ago, when I bought a box of TDK discs which are dark blue in colour, I'm not sure what dye they use. I've heard of the Black Discs, I thought they were only used by Sony for the original Sony Playstation. You talk about cheap DVD recorders not being any good for recording CD's, what brand of DVD recorder would you recomend as CD-RW only drives are not easy to find any more, and I only ever record CD's. SPINDLE CASES SUCK, I NEVER BUY THEM.

It's unfortunate how difficult the Verbatim DataLifePlus CD's are to get here in the US. (The DVD versions are more common, and I think the only recordable DVD formulation they make.) I have to order them over the internet. You're right about the reliability being great-- I'm impressed with the build quality and compatibility of these discs. The top has excellent scratch coating. Unfortunately, Verbatim makes regular phtalocyanine discs as well (light green bottoms) which are more common here...
