how is the Q9450 ... ( 3 months ago by tommasfoolery)
how is the Q9450 capable of 3.2 GHz? this is what intel's website says:
Processor Number = Q9450
Process Technology = 45 nm
Cache = 12MB
Clock Speed = 2.66 GHz
Front Side Bus = 1333 MHz
This is by using ... ( 3 months ago by realgadgetreviews)
This is by using high quality motherboard, and other components to overclock the CPU to run faster than it was set to. There a lot of reasons why this is possible, but the main reason is because intel needs to have different price points for their CPUs, for example this is the exact same CPU as the QX9770 that is a 1,500$ part, running at 3.2 - but because not everyone has 1,500 to spend on a CPU, what Intel does is "clock down" the CPU to a slower speed and they charge less. I clock it back up!

unfortunately its not that simple
first of all intel doesnt just clock it down, they make the cpu designed to run 2.66ghz not higher. when you overclock you set the fsb(core clock) higher that intels orginal clock. most of the time with a good cooler overclocking will go fine.
btw the qx9770 has a unlocked multiplier, if you know what that means.... the people who buy the qx9770 dont buy it for the 3.2 ghz they buy it so they can overclock to 4ghz and up which you cant do with the q9450
thank you for that ... ( 3 months ago by realgadgetreviews)
thank you for that - and I have 2 QX9650 and a QX6850 CPU - and the 2 are at 4.0 and the other is the older 65nm so its only at 3.6 - and yea it is not a smart idea to buy the QX9770 because they dont OC as well, but - they are the same chip with the same L2 cache - as I said earlier - there are a lot of reasons... point being it does have the max cooling fan Intel Extreme CPUs come with - if you bought either the QX9650 or the QX9770 you will know the fan I am talking about. Do you recommend me a Q9550 on this board?
I would say that ... ( 2 months ago by realgadgetreviews)
I would say that the Q9550 would be a great choice because it is Intels new line of Quad Core CPUs using the 45nm Fabrication process, that means that it is a smaller micro arcitecture, runs cooler, overclocks better and has a lot of on die memory; thats the 12 megabytes of on CPU memory called the L2 cache. This makes it a great CPU and with the latest ASUS BIOS you will be able to OC very well. It is basically the exact same CPU as the Q9450 in the computer, and thats OCed to 3.2 GHz! Thanks.

Do you recommend me this board or EVGA Nforce 680i for gaming? What difference between the ASUS X38 WS Pro and EVGA Nforce 680i. Thank you
If you are looking ... ( 2 months ago by realgadgetreviews)
If you are looking for gaming and SLI from Nvidia, then I would recomment the 680i.
If you are looking for a gaming system that supports ATI's CrossFire, then I would suggest Intels X38/48 boards like this one from ASUS. Do you like Nvidia, or ATI? I like Nvidia and I would suggest an Nforce motherboard. But both are great solutions for many reasons and not limmited to gaming. Thanks.

This is assuming you're using an intel CPU. As of October 2008 ATI beats NVIDIA in every price bracket so I would suggest either an intel x38/48 if you're using intel or an AMD chipset if you're using AMD.
