Can you believe that Carol King supposedly wrote this song, inspired by "Little Eva's" experience of domestic abuse with her boyfriend. It is said that Eva believed her boyfriend hit her because he loved her. I do remember this song but I didn't understand the subject matter - it had a good beat, you could cha-cha to it. It's even rumored that the Crystals didn't like this song but Phil Spector pushed them to record it.

The song was banned when it came out but i'm sure there are shit loads of people who can relate to it. Regardless of the trouble he has found himself in to me the man is a legend. Music is about expressing emotions and Spector took on ones that we all feel but are seldom expressed in such a commercial medium as pop.

Dear oogie11,thanks for you e mail I have just listened to this song for the first time and you are right it ha the spooky feel of the Shan Gri Lars He Cried.Last week we had a program on TV [in UK] about Phil Spector and it was very good a close insite into a brilliant man, although now he is not very good in his health,but his songs will last forever.

you're welcome watmoughwelder, yeah,both songs have that spooky quality, sinister in its way...oh, yeah, i watched that phil spector documentary too, it was on bbc2 methinks, but i missed it so i watched it on bbc iplayer...very thought-provoking it was....um hmm, guess he was in poor health, but he seemed very animated when he was being interviewed...yeah, his songs are iconic indeed :)

I get bored with listening to lyrics about " I love you, you love me, she loves him, he/she".
Frank zappa wrote very few love songs beliveing there to be too much subject matter out there to be singing about one thing.

I think songs like this are a breath of fresh air, yet love songs like 'River Deep, Mountain High' are mind blowing. Think what you will of Phil Spector, your kids will be lucy to see another like him in their lifetimes! Enjoy!!
