My miniature smooth hair wont go anywhere near water which is a shame coz its such good exercise for them. My wire hair on the other hand would swim out to open sea if i wasnt around lol he also loves fresh mud "the mucky devil" lol. Thanks for the clip.

This is awesome. We have a miniature daschund puppy that we named Odie. When he goes up north he'll be getting into the water (well, more like a lake) for the first time ever. He seems to like the water, though.. he sometimes tries to climb into his water dish. XD You have such a fun dog it seems. =3

No disrespect intended, but what is it about your dog that leads you to believe that he is too mentally retarded to be able to swim? ALL dogs, including miniature dachshunds, know how to swim instinctively. They can't help it. The idea that their short legs prevents them from swimming is crazy! They have longer, more buoyant bodies, and are able to extend their back legs straight out and can swim almost like a seal.

I own two miniature dachshunds, one is long and slender, the other is a little overweight with a pot belly, and both can swim like fish. Let him go next time, please! I mean, he was paddling before you even placed him in the water! He can swim!

To set the record straight, Odie CANNOT swim alone because she had back surgery years ago and there was a bit of nerve damage so the back legs don't work in the water like a dog without surgery.

Actually, if he has a bad back swimming would be extremely therapeutic since it takes all of the pressure off the joints and allows you to exercise in an almost zero gravity type environment. I know this because of my own severe back problems and because I have had adanced arthritis since the age of 26, that we know of.
