This is the original After Burner arcade game. You're probably thinking of After Burner II, which was virtually identical bar the speed control, slightly different HUD layout and three extra stages.

Comment was late. It is just what csonicp says. There was not much popularity to Part 1. Part 1 has higher degree of difficulty than Part 2.
